How to disable Autorun on WindowsXP

In 2005 as a copy protection measure, Sony BMG included the Extended Copy Protection and MediaMax CD-3 software on music CDs. This software was automatically installed on desktop computers when customers tried to play the CDs. The software interferes with the normal way in which the Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X operating systems play CDs, opens security holes that allow viruses to break in, and causes other problems. It is widely described as spyware.

As a result, a number of parties have filed lawsuits against Sony BMG; the company ended up recalling all the affected CDs; and greater public attention was drawn to the issue of commercially-backed spyware.

You can determin if any of your CDs have XCP technology by the letters "XCP" printed on the back cover of the jewel case for the CD.

And its not just Sony. Although Sony have stopped doing this there are other 'rogue' companies distributing similar malware.

Ultimatly this is actually quite easy to prevent by disabling the Autorun feature of Windows.
There is two ways of disabling this feature. The first way is to hold down the 'Shift' button everytime you insert an optical disc. The second way is to permanently disable it in the registry by setting the "Autorun" subkey in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom to 0.

If you are using WindowsXP Professional Edition you can more easily disable as described below.
Start / Run / gpedit.msc / Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / System / Turn Off Autoplay

I configured mine to Turn Off Autoplay on All Drives.
