	Microsoft SideShow Technology to Power Next-Gen Remotes

	At the Microsoft WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Conference), Microsoft demonstrated a new technology called SideShow implemented in handheld remotes, as well as other devices such as digital picture frames and gaming keyboards. You might recognize SideShow from the more typical demonstration -- a small LCD embedded on the outside of a notebook computer that gives easy access to certain lightweight versions of traditional applications, like Outlook. No need to boot up to check your calendar. But a SideShow display need not be tethered to a PC. A SideShow-enabled remote, for example, might enable users to browse pictures, scan electronic programming guides, even receive RSS feeds with nothing more than an inexpensive (target price: less than $300US), thin device with a small screen. The heavy-duty processing and the information storage takes place in a connected PC. During a keynote address, a Microsoft product manager showed a prototype of one of the first SideShow-enabled remotes from Exceptional Innovation. Presumably, the device will enable access and control of traditional media-centric functions, as well as the full line of home systems (security, lighting, HVAC, etc.) that are controllable through EI's Lifeware automation software.
