  Provider to double net speed

The Adelaide company, run by chief executive Simon Hackett, said it would upgrade its system as soon as regulators approved it.

Annex M, billed as the next stage in the evolution of ADSL2+ broadband technology, is an International Telecommunications Union standard designed to double upload speeds from 1Mbps to 2Mbps.

Internode strategic development manager John Lindsay said the system would make it easier for remote workers and those hosting small web servers.

"People can access their office network at a speed comparable with accessing other things on the internet," he said. "It is ideal for videoconferencing and downloading large files."

Like ADSL2+, the performance of Annex M deteriorates the further the user is from the exchange.

It also causes download speeds to slow slightly.

Internode is awaiting approval of the system by the Australian Communications Industry Forum and the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

The approval process will ensure it does not cause problems with other services using the same copper phone line.

The most likely next step is a limited trial with a few customers, followed by commercial deployment once approval is received.
