Australia's Newest Broadcast Facility Selects Grass Valley

The recently announced landmark playout facility planned for Australia, a joint venture between the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and WIN Corporation (WIN), has selected Grass Valley™ as the prime contractor to design, build, and equip a major new multi-channel, multi-client HD/SD playout center in Australia. The custom-built playout center will include ingest, storage, asset management, automated playout, monitoring, and headend systems with all applicable equipment and professional services being provided by Grass Valley, according to the multi-million euro agreement.

The playout center will be the first facility in Australia to host multi-client, free-to-air broadcasters and will be equipped with Grass Valley K2 media servers for online and near-line storage using new 1 TB RAID disks, K2 Summit™ servers for time delay, Maestro™ SD/HD branding and master control systems, Trinix™ NXT routers, and GeckoFlex™ signal processing products for signal switching and conditioning. A ContentShare2™ workflow and media asset management system will be used within the playout center as well as to interface the playout center with its multiple clients' individual production centers. A Granite Sentinel will be used for ASI monitoring of the playout center's MPEG-2 transport streams.

"This playout center will deliver enhanced and cost-effective services and increase the programming capability and capacity of WIN now and into the future. It will equip us to cater to the enhanced demands for Digital Broadcasting throughout Australia," said Peter Lambourne, Executive Director of WIN Corporation. "The process for selecting the lead contractor for the new facility was very competitive and we chose Grass Valley because of its breadth of products, systems expertise with this type of project, and their clear understanding of our goals."

As part of the project, Grass Valley has also been commissioned to interface and integrate the new playout center with the existing operations of both the ABC and WIN, including central ingest and disaster recovery facilities.

"The new playout center will be one of the most sophisticated broadcasting facilities in the world when it opens." said Jeff Rosica, Senior Vice President of Grass Valley. "Grass Valley is quite excited to be a part this project from its initial consultation work through commissioning and going on air, and is proud to be an integral supplier of several key products that will enable the realization of this world-class broadcast center."

The K2 Summit servers and Trinix NXT routers selected are just part of a host of new products that Grass Valley recently introduced as part of its new HD product range that includes cameras, production switchers, routing switchers, and servers. These new products were shown for the first time at NAB 2009. IBC 2009 will mark the European debut of these new products.
