Beyerdynamic offers its premium iPod headphones in 32, 250 and 600 Ohm

It's like a curse. Listen to your iPod or any other MP3 player using high-end headphones and the experience can be jarring: the sound reproduction sounds dull, quiet and feeble. The reverse is true as well. Plug your high-end MP3 headphones into an expensive stereo and you'll notice the lack of finesse and detailed resolution of quality home headphones. This isn't a coincidence. Quite the opposite, there's a good reason for those results. The size of the drive coil in the transducer capsule determines the headphone's electrical impedance – a value that determines not just its sensitivity and power, but its sound as well. Scaling up performance brings with it an increase in the moving mass weight while also reducing the reproduction fidelity that the diaphragm uses to following the electric music signal.

All of which has led audio specialists beyerdynamic to become the first manufacturer to offer its premium line in three different versions providing top performance for different applications. This luxurious attention to detail is only possible through the individual handcrafting of the units undertaken at the headquarters in Heilbronn.

The best-selling DT 770, DT 880 and DT 990 headphones are available with 32, 250 and 600 Ohm coils, allowing audiophiles to make their selection based on how the headphones will be primarily used. 32 Ohms are best suited as MP3 headphones, with power-saving amplifiers perfect for on-the-go use of iPod & Co while still providing maximal volume and dynamism.
The 600 Ohm version is better suited for bringing out every musical nuance on high-quality stereo equipment or in conjunction with the high-end beyerdynamic A1 headphone amplifier.
The 250 Ohm variant provides an optimal compromise of power and mastery for variable usage conditions.

HiFi & Records magazine ran an interesting comparative test of three beyerdynamic DT 880 headphones that were identical except for the impedance ratings.
They discovered a striking – or in this case, clearly audible – agreement between theory and practice. Compared directly with the 600 Ohm variant, the 32 Ohm headphones were clearly louder and almost as transparent, but somewhat harsher. The 600 model by contrast required a powerful high-end headphone amplifier (beyerdynamic A1), but rewarded the extra effort with uncanny fidelity to detail. The best compromise between instant dynamism and perfectly refined, natural playback comes through the 250 Ohm headphones, an all-round talent for on the go and high-quality stereo equipment alike.

The test from HiFi & Records (2/2007) was clear in its recommendations. Outspoken audiophiles listening primarily from home are best served by the 600 Ohm model from the premium line. Those looking for headphones for their iPod should choose a DT 770, DT 880 or DT 990 model with 32 Ohms. And those who listen sometimes at home and sometimes on the go will enjoy the 250 Ohm premium headphones best of all.
