  Rane Mongoose and RAD’s

Audio Telex have been promoting and supporting CobraNet products for over 10 years and if we had a dollar for every time someone asked about 2 channel i/o boxes, well….we’d have a big bag full of dollars by now.
Rane now have a solution for this common request with the Mongoose Remote Audio CobraNet Interface and the RAD Input/Output panels. In short, RAD’s are 2 channel input /output plates that connect (via CAT5) to the 1RU Mongoose device. The Mongoose then connects to your favourite DSP system (MediaMatrix NION of course) via CobraNet. Each Mongoose can support up to 8 RAD panels and each RAD can be up to 100m (longer with CAT6) from the Mongoose device. Large or distributed installations can use more than one Mongoose for 16 or more panels.
Mongoose and the RAD panels are a cost-effective option for distributed audio systems where each function room in a hotel for example only needs a couple of audio channels. Previously, the only option was to dedicate a multi-channel CobraNet i/o box for each room. Now with RAD’s, integrators can install a 2 channel RAD wall plate wherever audio inputs or outputs are needed. The Mongoose then converts signal from the RAD panels (AES3) to CobraNet and transmits it over CAT5 or fibre to the CobraNet port of a DSP system. With RAD’s, audio is digitised at the wall plate, eliminating interference and other issues associated with long analogue cabling. Additionally, RAD’s are hot swappable so if a unit is damaged in any way, it can be swapped out in minutes by venue staff.
There are four RAD wall plate models, each available in black, white or ivory with a Decora surround plate. The four RAD wall plates include:

RAD 1 – 2 Mic Inputs on XLR’s
RAD 2 – 1 Mic on XLR, 1 Line Input on dual RCA’s and 3.5mm jack
RAD 3 – 2 Line Inputs on XLR’s
RAD 4 – 2 Line Outputs on XLR’s

Each RAD plate also includes a signal present/overload LED plus a “the cable’s good” indicator as well…..and these dim with the light level in the room.

Rane’s Tracker software is used to configure the panels (gain, phantom power etc) and to assign CobraNet channels. Any cabling mishaps are indicated both on the RAD panels and in Tracker software for simple troubleshooting.
The Mongoose’s 32 x 32 digital audio matrix router receives its first 16 audio channels from up to eight RADs via the eight rear panel RJ-45 Remote Audio Device ports. The second 16 matrix input channels come from two eight-channel CobraNet receive (Rx) Bundles via standard CobraNet Primary and Secondary/backup ports. The 32 matrix router outputs transmit 16 channels to eight RADs and 16 more channels to two CobraNet transmit (Tx) Bundles.

RAD panels and two or more Mongoose devices can also run without a DSP processor if simple panel to panel routing is required.
Mongoose’s rear panel Ethernet port provides for direct or network connection to a computer running Rane’s Mongoose Tracker setup software. Those without knowledge of networks are assured easy network communications with Zeroconf (Link-local/mDNS) and DHCP support. Gone are the days of installers requiring intricate IP knowledge. Yet, facility network managers can configure Mongoose like any other IP network device. The Ethernet port also supports Auto MDI/MDIX which automatically detects and permits either an Ethernet crossover cable (included) or a standard Ethernet cable to be used when directly connecting to a computer for setup.

The Rane Mongoose and the RAD panels provide even more flexibility for today’s complex DSP installations. Please consider them for your next project. On top of the increased flexibility and ease of installation, they may even save you a few dollars.
