  Magenta Celebrates 10 Years as UTP Distribution Pioneer

  Magenta Research, the recognized leader in video, audio and control signal distribution and switching over Cat5/CatX cable and optical fiber, is thrilled to be celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Magenta was formed in 1998 when co-founder and current CEO Keith Mortensen spun off the new company from Micrognosis, a financial trading floor switching systems company. While the company originally envisioned a market for KVM over UTP technology, a field that Magenta served in its early years, the company quickly migrated its technology to fill a perceived void—and a brand new opportunity—in the (then) fledgling digital signage market.

1999 saw Magenta release its first-generation MultiView™ product, which offered the world’s first high-quality XGA transmission over UTP capability.

Mortensen recalled, “At early trade shows and demonstrations, people use to verbally chortle at the thought of doing high resolution video transmission over UTP [instead of coaxial cable]. This ‘Doubting Thomas’ attitude was initially difficult to overcome, even when doing real-world demonstrations.”

“We had to put in a lot of time and effort to educate people on our technology,” Mortensen continued, noting, “That’s why we feel comfortable in saying we showed the world that high-resolution video over Cat5 was possible!”

Other Magenta innovations quickly followed:

* 2001 - Combined full-modem serial and video on a single Cat5
* 2002 - Patented RepliSync technology and daisy chain capable receivers.
* 2003 – Transmission of UXGA 1,500 feet over UTP with the AK1500 receiver.
* 2004 – Debut of the first Magenta UTP-based matrix switcher.
* 2005 – Combination of video, stereo audio and full-duplex serial on a single Cat5
(The -SA Series).
* 2006 – The largest Cat5-based scalable matrix switch of its kind, The Mondo Matrix™, available in increments of 16 inputs/outputs from 16x16 to 256x512.
* 2007 – Debut of the industry’s first 2,000-foot receiver (XR-2000).
* 2008 – Unveiled a 1x8 digital signage transmitter (Octet) that allows video, stereo audio and addressable duplex serial distribution from a single source to hundreds of displays.
